Ontario M1 Motorcycle Practice Test – 64 Free Questions
Free M1 Motorcycle Practice Test — 64 Questions With Instant Feedback
This is an unofficial practice test for study purposes. It is not affiliated with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, DriveTest, or the Government of Ontario.
Getting your motorcycle licence in Ontario starts with the M1 knowledge test. This free practice test gives you 64 questions in the same three-part format as the real exam: motorcycle-specific knowledge, road signs, and rules of the road.
Every question includes instant feedback and a short explanation, so you learn the reason behind each answer — not just the letter. Work through all 64, review your mistakes, and retake until you are consistently scoring above 80 percent in every section.
What Is on the M1 Knowledge Test?
The M1 knowledge test is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam taken at a DriveTest centre. It is not timed, and you get your result before you leave. The format below is widely reported by rider training schools and study guides:
| Section | Questions | Score needed to pass |
|---|---|---|
| Motorcycle-specific knowledge | 24 | 19/24 (80%) |
| Road signs | 20 | 16/20 (80%) |
| Rules of the road | 20 | 16/20 (80%) |
The part most riders underestimate: you must pass all three sections independently.
A perfect score on road signs will not save a weak motorcycle-knowledge section. This practice test mirrors that structure — 24 motorcycle questions, 20 sign questions, and 20 rules questions — so no section gets neglected.
M1 Licence Rules: What Level One Allows
Passing the knowledge test earns you an M1 licence and entry into Level One of graduated licensing. But an M1 comes with strict conditions. Break them and you risk fines, demerit points, or losing the licence:
- Zero alcohol. Your blood-alcohol level must be zero at all times while riding.
- Daylight only. Ride only from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.
- No fast roads. Stay off roads with speed limits over 80 km/h — except highways 11, 17, 61, 69, 71, 101, 102, 144, and 655, where some riders have no other route.
- No passengers. You may not carry anyone on the bike, no matter their experience.
- Minimum 60 days. You must hold the M1 for at least 60 days before attempting the Level One road test.
- Minimum age 16. You must be at least 16 to apply, and you will also need to pass a vision test.
These conditions exist because new riders are most at risk in their first months. Night riding, high-speed roads, and passengers all multiply the demands on a beginner. Respect the limits and they will keep you alive while your skills grow.
How to Use This M1 Practice Test
- Answer all 64 questions. Work through the motorcycle section, then signs, then rules — the same order as the reported test format.
- Read every explanation. After each answer you get instant green/red feedback plus a short explanation. The explanation is where the real learning happens.
- Note your weak section. The results screen shows your overall score. If one section keeps dragging you down, study that handbook chapter before retaking.
- Retake until you score 90%+. The real test needs 80% per section. A 90% cushion here means test-day nerves will not drop you below the line.
- Study the handbook alongside. Our guide to using the Ontario Driver’s Handbook shows how to study any MTO handbook efficiently — the same method works for the Motorcycle Handbook.
Motorcycle Topics to Master Before Test Day
The motorcycle-specific section draws on the Official MTO Motorcycle Handbook. These are the topics it covers — and the ones this practice test drills:
- Lane position. The dominant left-third position, and how to adjust it for curves, intersections, and hazards.
- Steering and control. Countersteering, smooth throttle control, and downshifting before turns.
- Braking. Using both brakes together, and why the front brake does most of the work.
- Group riding. Staggered formation, spacing, and the leader’s responsibilities.
- Protective equipment. Approved helmets, eye protection, and visible clothing.
- Dangerous surfaces. Gravel, wet paint, metal covers, and crossing railway tracks at 90 degrees.
- Carrying loads and passengers. Weight limits, secure fastening, and passenger footrests and seating.
- Maintenance. The T-CLOCS pre-ride check: tyres, controls, lights, oil, chassis, stands.
If you are also preparing for a car licence, our free G1 practice test covers the same road signs and rules of the road in a 50-question format.
7 Study Tips for the M1 Knowledge Test
- Read the Motorcycle Handbook first. It is the source document. Skim it once for the big picture, then re-read the chapters on controls, lane position, and Level One rules slowly.
- Do not skip the signs. Twenty of the 64 questions are road signs — the same signs car drivers learn. Drill them until recognition is instant.
- Learn the six M1 conditions cold. Zero alcohol, daylight only, no 80+ km/h roads, no passengers, 90-day validity, 60-day wait. Examiners love these.
- Visualize every manoeuvre. For lane position and turning questions, picture yourself on the bike. Abstract answers become obvious when you see the road in your head.
- Study in short sessions. Three 20-minute sessions beat one exhausting hour. Your brain consolidates riding judgment between sessions.
- Retake the full 64 regularly. A single section drill builds knowledge; full runs build stamina and reveal the sections you keep neglecting.
- Book the road test early. With only 90 days of M1 validity, schedule your Level One road test as soon as you pass the knowledge test.
What to Bring to the M1 Knowledge Test
The test itself is straightforward, but showing up unprepared wastes a trip. The Motorcycle Handbook’s own checklist says to bring:
- Two pieces of identification. Check the MTO Driver’s Handbook for which documents qualify — they must show your legal name and date of birth.
- Money for the test fee. DriveTest accepts cash, debit, and credit. Confirm the current fee on the official site before you go, since fees change.
- Glasses or contact lenses if you need them to read or ride.
Arrive with time to spare and a calm head. The exam is not timed, so read each question twice — rushing causes more failures than hard questions do. Most riders who study the handbook and drill practice questions finish with time to review every answer.
Frequently Asked Questions About the M1 Test
How many questions are on the M1 knowledge test?
The test is widely reported to have 64 multiple-choice questions: 24 on motorcycle-specific knowledge, 20 on road signs, and 20 on rules of the road. This practice test mirrors that exact structure.
What score do I need to pass?
You need at least 80% in each section independently — roughly 19 of 24 motorcycle questions and 16 of 20 in each of the other two sections. Failing one section means failing the whole test.
How long is the M1 licence valid?
Only 90 days. You must also hold it for a minimum of 60 days before you can take the Level One road test, so book that test early.
Can I ride on the highway with an M1?
Not on roads with speed limits over 80 km/h, with narrow exceptions for highways 11, 17, 61, 69, 71, 101, 102, 144, and 655. You also may not ride at night or carry passengers.
Do I need my own motorcycle for the knowledge test?
No. The knowledge test is a computer-based written exam at a DriveTest centre — you only need a motorcycle for the road tests. Bring two pieces of ID, money for the test fee, and glasses or contacts if you need them.
Is this practice test official?
No. This is an unofficial study tool with original questions written from the MTO Motorcycle Handbook. It is not affiliated with DriveTest or the Ontario government, and it cannot guarantee you will pass. Always confirm current fees and requirements with official sources before your test.
