This free Ontario air brake practice test helps you prepare for the Z endorsement knowledge test with eight numbered practice tests and a full 200-question study bank. Every question is original, written from the topics in the Official MTO Air Brake Handbook, and every answer comes with a plain-language explanation.

This is an unofficial practice resource for study purposes. It is not affiliated with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, DriveTest, or the Government of Ontario, and it does not contain real test questions.

What Is the Z Endorsement?

The Z endorsement is an add-on to an Ontario driver’s licence. It proves you are qualified to operate a vehicle equipped with air brakes or an air-over-hydraulic brake system.

Most large trucks, buses, and many heavy work vehicles use air brakes. Without a Z on your licence, you cannot legally drive them, even if you hold the right licence class.

Air brakes work very differently from the hydraulic brakes in a car. They store energy as compressed air, and they need daily inspection and testing to stay safe. That is why Ontario tests them separately.

Key fact: The Z is an endorsement, not a licence class of its own. It is added to the licence you already hold, such as a G, D, or A licence.

Who Needs an Air Brake Endorsement?

You need a Z endorsement if the vehicle you drive has an air brake system. That covers most tractor-trailers, straight trucks, dump trucks, cement mixers, garbage trucks, fire trucks, and highway coaches.

For a Class A licence, the Z is effectively mandatory, because almost every tractor-trailer on the road uses air brakes. For Classes B, C, and D it is optional, but most employers expect it.

If you are working toward a trucking or bus driving job, getting the Z early makes you employable for far more positions. It is one of the highest-value add-ons a commercial driver can hold.

Two Ways to Get Your Z Endorsement

Ontario gives you two routes to the endorsement. Both end with the Z on your licence, but they suit different situations.

Route 1: Take an MTO-approved air brake course. Courses run about 12 hours and are offered by vehicle fleet owners, community colleges, and safety organizations. The course includes its own knowledge and practical testing.

  • If you hold a B, C, D, E, F, or G licence, the course must be taken with a vehicle fleet owner.
  • When you finish the course, you receive a referral envelope.
  • Take that envelope to a DriveTest centre within 6 months to have the endorsement added.

Route 2: Test directly at DriveTest. You study the Official MTO Air Brake Handbook yourself, then take the air brake knowledge test at a DriveTest centre. After passing, you book and pass a practical test on a vehicle with air brakes.

Whichever route you choose, you must already hold a valid Ontario licence. The course route requires a Class G licence or higher — a G2 licence is not accepted for the endorsement.

Caution: Do not let a referral envelope expire. You have 6 months from finishing a course to present it at DriveTest — after that, the course result may no longer be accepted.

What Is on the Air Brake Knowledge Test?

The knowledge test is a multiple-choice test taken at a DriveTest centre. It is built from the Official MTO Air Brake Handbook, and the questions focus on how the system works and how to inspect it.

Ontario does not publish an official question count, and sources disagree, so treat exact numbers with care. The test is widely reported to be a short multiple-choice test, and the pass mark is widely reported as 80 percent.

The topics you need to know include:

  • How the compressor, governor, air dryer, and reservoirs supply and store air
  • Service brakes, spring brakes, and the dual-circuit safety system
  • Pressure build-up, governor cut-in and cut-out, and the low-air warning
  • Daily inspection, air loss testing, and brake adjustment
  • Trailer air systems, glad hands, and the tractor protection valve
  • Safe braking technique, brake fade, and downhill driving

The practice tests on this page cover every one of those topic areas. If you can explain why each correct answer is right, you are studying the way the real test demands.

What the Practical Test Covers

The practical test proves you can inspect and test a real air brake system, not just answer questions about one. It is done on a vehicle equipped with air brakes, in one of two versions: a tractor-trailer version and a single-vehicle version.

You will demonstrate the in-cab and walk-around checks: pressure build-up, the low-air warning, air loss rate, governor cut-in and cut-out, and spring brake operation. You will also check brake adjustment by marking and measuring pushrod stroke.

Bring the right equipment with you:

  • Wheel chocks or blocks
  • A stopwatch or a watch with a second hand
  • A way to hold the brake pedal fully applied
  • Something to mark the pushrod and measure its stroke
  • Protective headgear and eyewear

How Much Does the Z Endorsement Cost?

At DriveTest, the air brake endorsement package costs $66. That package includes both the knowledge test and the practical test.

  • Knowledge test on its own: $16
  • Practical test on its own: $50
  • Official MTO Air Brake Handbook: $23 at DriveTest centres

If you take the course route instead, the course fee is set by the provider, so prices vary. The DriveTest package fee still applies when your endorsement is processed, so budget for both parts of your chosen route.

Study tip: Work through the numbered practice tests first, then drill your weak topics in the full question bank. Explanations teach the system, so read them even when you answer correctly.

How to Use These Practice Tests

The quiz at the top of this page offers eight numbered practice tests, drawn from our 200-question air brake bank. Each test mixes system parts, inspection, trailer, and safe-operation questions, just like your study needs to.

Answer every question, read the explanation, and note the topics you miss. Then retake the test until you are comfortably above the 80 percent mark before moving to the next one.

When you want the complete library, study the full air brake question bank with all 200 questions and answers on one page, plus a free PDF you can print.

Renewing Your Z Endorsement

Renewal works differently from getting the endorsement the first time. You no longer renew the Z by writing the air brake knowledge test at a DriveTest centre.

Instead, you complete an online air brake learning module before you renew your licence. Finish the module, download or print your certificate of completion, and bring it with your driver’s licence to a DriveTest centre or your Driver Certification Program organization.

If you hold a commercial class licence, the vision test and commercial knowledge test at renewal are still done in person. Only the air brake part moved online.

Preparing With the Official Air Brake Handbook

Practice questions work best alongside the source material. The Official MTO Air Brake Handbook explains each system with diagrams, and it is the book the real knowledge test is built from.

Read one handbook section, then answer the matching practice questions here. When an explanation surprises you, go back to that section and read it again — that loop is what turns memorized answers into real understanding.

You can read the handbook online for free, or buy a printed copy at a DriveTest centre for $23. Either way, it should be open beside you for most of your study sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are These the Real Z Endorsement Test Questions?

No. These are original practice questions written from the topics in the Official MTO Air Brake Handbook. The real test questions are not published, and no practice site can give them to you.

How Many Questions Are on the Ontario Air Brake Knowledge Test?

Ontario does not publish an official count, and study sources disagree — most say the test is widely reported at around 20 multiple-choice questions. The pass mark is widely reported as 80 percent.

How Much Does the Z Endorsement Cost at DriveTest?

The DriveTest air brake endorsement package is $66, covering the knowledge test ($16) and the practical test ($50). The Official MTO Air Brake Handbook costs $23.

Do I Need to Take a Course, or Can I Just Take the Tests?

Both routes are official. You can take an MTO-approved course of about 12 hours, or study on your own and take the knowledge and practical tests directly at DriveTest.

Can I Renew My Z Endorsement Online?

Partly. Renewal uses an online learning module that you complete before visiting DriveTest with your certificate — the air brake knowledge test is no longer used for renewals.

What Licence Do I Need Before Getting a Z Endorsement?

You need a valid Ontario driver’s licence. For the course route you must hold a Class G licence or higher — a G2 licence is not accepted for adding the endorsement.

This practice test is unofficial and provided for study only. Always confirm current requirements, fees, and test details with the Official MTO Air Brake Handbook, ontario.ca, and DriveTest before booking.
